Straight Ticket Votes
“Straight Ticket Votes” allow voters to check one box to vote for all of a party’s candidates, instead of voting for each race individually. During the November 2022 election 54% of all votes cast were straight ticket and 36% were straight ticket Republican. This doesn’t make much of a difference in popular races such as for governor or secretary or state because almost everyone votes for those. It can weigh heavily in down ticket races where fewer people vote, such as for County Road Commissioner or the County Commissioner for a district. In the road commissioner’s race, 39% of the total vote was straight ticket Republican and in the county commissioner for the 7th district, 45% of the votes cast were straight ticket Republican. In these elections, it is difficult for the non-Republican candidate to win.

Party Heartlands
So where do most of the Republican and Democratic voters live? That is to say where are the heartlands of the Democrats and Republicans in Menominee County? The number of votes in a precinct is linked to the size of its population and the size of the population often follows the major roads. In our case US Highways 2 and 41 and a bit of M35 and M69 (see first chart below on the left). The middle and right charts below are taken from the gubernatorial race. The middle chart shows the Republican heartland and the chart on the right, the Democratic one. Notice that the Democratic and Republican charts look a lot alike because those precincts have the larger voting populations.
